Let us introduce ourselves to you and explain our role as your student’s counselor. To help familiarize you with what counselors do we would like to share our counseling philosophy at ELM.
First and foremost we are student advocates. We are primarily concerned with your student’s academic, social and emotional needs. We are accessible to students and parents who have general questions or concerns about education and the adolescent experience. We are also available in times of unusual distress and necessary family transitions that may cause stress.
An important part of what we do is to help children learn about relationships and deal with them effectively. One of the ways we facilitate this learning experience is by mediating conflict which might occur on our school campus. We have a very successful, time-tested method known as the six-step conflict resolution process. Students become more aware of their behaviors, the responses of others, and they commit to being part of the solution. Students have the opportunity to become more aware of their feelings and learn new strategies to deal with uncomfortable situations.
We also coordinate information between school and home. This role includes speaking to students regarding academic needs and providing feedback to teachers and parents. We act as intermediaries where communication between parent and teacher may be challenging. One of our most important academic duties is to schedule and conduct parent/teacher/student conferences. This is one of the best ways of finding out exactly how your child is doing in their classes and devising an intervention plan.
Although we have given you a general overview of the counselor’s role, a typical day might include a variety of other duties. In short, we hope to assist your child in obtaining the skills to follow the Triton motto… Be Kind ~ Be Awesome ~ Make The Right Choices.
